Collège des Bernardins - Paris
Eaux Vives
October 8 to November 29, 2026

What might an artist, an oceanographer and a bioacoustician have to say to one another? Brought together around the Eaux Vives exhibition, they tell how water has shaped their work and their relationship with the living world. An invitation to follow them and listen to water.

Caroline Desnoëttes, Virginie Thierry and Olivier Adam share the same conviction: water is essential to humanity, yet we have come to forget how much we depend on it. In hurried, largely urban lives, we often reduce it to tap water, until a flood or a drought reminds us of its power.

With her Eaux Vives exhibition, Caroline Desnoëttes puts water back at the center of our attention. At the Collège des Bernardins, this gesture takes on a particular resonance: already in Genesis, water is there before all things, the raw material of a world yet to be born.

Virginie Thierry, oceanographer, studies the ocean using data transmitted in real time by nearly 4,300 autonomous instruments, the Argo floats, evenly distributed across all the world’s oceans.

Olivier Adam, bioacoustician, listens to cetaceans to better understand their behavior and the ways they communicate.

Caroline Desnoëttes, an artist fascinated by the living world, has imagined a monumental work made of 2,000 m² of paper. To create it, she drew on her exchanges with the researchers, on the songs of cetaceans and on the ocean movements revealed by the Argo floats.

At the Bernardins, their dialogue brings us back to an obvious truth: water is a condition of our existence, long before it is a resource.
